Alginate Dressing
Alginate dressing is made of calcium-alginate and it forms a soft gel that absorbs fluid when it comes into contact with wound exudates. Alginate dressing helps utilize the proven benefits of moist wound management for better healing.
Features
- Easy to Remove: When used in a moderate to highly exuding wound, the dressing forms a soft gel which does not adhere to the delicate healing tissues in the wound bed. The dressing can be easily removed from the wound in one piece, or washed out with saline water.
- Conforms to Wound Contours: Alginate dressing is very soft and conformable, allowing it to be molded, folded or cut to meet a wide range of wound shapes and sizes. As the fibers gel, an even more intimate contact with the wound is formed and maintained.
- Moist Wound Environment: The formation of a gel by the action of exudates on alginate fibers creates a most environment at the wound bed. This helps prevent eschar formation and promotes and optimal moist wound environment.
- Highly Absorbent: In-vitro studies have shown that alginate dressing can absorb more than ten times its own weight in exudates. This allows the dressing to remain in the wound for up to 7 days, depending on the nature of the wound and the volume of exudates.
- Documented hemostatic effect: Alginate-based dressings have documented hemostatic effect, i.e. ability to reduce blood flow in minor bleedings.
Indications
Ulcers, diabetic foot, leg ulcers or aortic ulcers, pressure injury, postoperative wound, burns; wounds with medium to severe exudates, sinus and lacunar, sinus drainage, fat liquefaction of wound, wound abscess, nasal endoscope bronchoscopy after packing, and dressing after anal fistula surgery.
Directions for use
a. Clean the wound in accordance with standard procedures;
b. Choose a dressing which is slightly larger than wounds and place it in intimate contact with the wound bed ensuring the entire surface is covered;
c. Cover the wound with and appropriate secondary dressing. Wound exudates will evaporate from the gel surface; the secondary dressing should not hinder this evaporative process where exudate is heavy;
d. Change the dressing daily in heavily draining wounds, reducing to twice a week (or weekly) as healing proceeds;
e. Use tweezers, forceps or a gloved hand to gently lift the dressing to remove alginate dressing - the high gel strength generally slows it to remain in one piece. The dressing may adhere if used on a very lightly exuding wound. Removal of the dressing is facilitated by saturating the wound with saline.
Precautions
Ensure the packed dressings in cavities, sinuses etc. have been removed. The dressing may adhere if used on very lightly exuding wounds. If the dressing is not easily removed, oisten it with saline, then remove. Do not use on patients with a known allergy to alginates.
Storage and Condition & Shelf Life
Alginate dressing should be stored in cool and dry environment. Avoid direct sun light. The shelf life is 3 years.
